“Hurry. Don’t leave!”
I’ll never forget the speech at my college graduation. The speaker was actor and author George Plimpton, a brilliant, talented, successful writer. What we got instead?
“All of you, great young minds, tomorrow’s leaders, the next generation…”
Our class expected sage words of wisdom.
We waited patiently. He exhorted us: “Before it’s too late, go back to your dorm rooms. Unpack your suitcases. DON’T leave. Hurry. Don’t leave. There’s still time…”
In fact, we did have to leave. Graduation meant we were due to take the gifts of education and time our parents and professors had provided us, and do something with them.
To graduates in the venerable science and profession of packaging, this is what I would advise you:
- Don’t rush through graduation
- Enjoy some deserved celebration
But after, you also have to leave. Know that you are entering a profession you can truly be proud of.
One that is important to the health and safety of hundreds of millions of people just in the USA. Consumers are depending on you for safe experiences, reasonable prices for their favorite products, and some good old delight from the goods and brands they use daily.
My advice? Every time you are meeting people and exchanging what everyone does for a living, tell them proudly you are in packaging.
Step into it. Help a generation of consumers recognize how important packaging is to a better and always improving society. As a veteran of the packaging industry, I am so excited for you to join us.
